Steve Ettlinger has been making large wooden sculptures since 2013, mostly in the village of Stonington, on Deer Isle, an island on the Maine coast.

He is inspired not only by his love of modern, abstract sculpture (especially that of Constantin Brancusi) but also by the abundance on Deer Isle of logs, neighbors with chainsaws, and the many artists there. He lives in Brooklyn, NY when not in Maine, (where most neighbors do not have chainsaws), where he rents time in a woodworking shop in the Gowanus neighborhood. He brings logs down from Maine to work on in Brooklyn.

Ettlinger has restored several old houses and one old boat, hence the familiarity with tools and wood. Prior to picking up the chainsaw, he wrote nine nonfiction books and created dozens more as a book producer (see publishing career). From 1978 to 1985 he was a picture editor for GEO magazine in New York City. Before that, Ettlinger was Assistant Bureau Chief for Magnum Photos in Paris, where he lived for six years and ate at many of the world’s finest restaurants. He is a 1971 graduate of Tufts University with a degree in Political Science.

Ettlinger is a member of two cooperative artists’ groups, Park Slope Windsor Terrace Artists (Brooklyn, NY) and the Deer Isle Artists Association (Deer Isle, ME), where he has shown work in multiple group shows. Some work is shown continuously (and sold) in Maine by Ronald Harte Antiques, Art, and Photography Gallery, in Deer Isle, Maine. He has also shown regularly at BWAC (Red Hook, Brooklyn) and Gowanus Open Studios (Brooklyn).
